Hackers deface website of lawyers for US Marine

Feb. 3, 2012

WASHINGTON — Members of the hacker group Anonymous defaced the website on Friday of the law firm that defended a US Marine who faced charges in connection with the 2005 killing of 24 Iraqi civilians.

Anonymous, in a statement which appeared on the website of the law firm of Puckett and Faraj, also claimed to have published online three gigabytes of private email messages of attorneys Neal Puckett and Haytham Faraj.

“The contents of these email messages include detailed records, transcripts, testimony, trial evidence, and legal defense donation records pertaining to not only Frank Wuterich but also many other marines they have represented,” Anonymous said.

Puckett served as the lead defense lawyer for Staff Sergeant Frank Wuterich, who faced a US military court martial last month in connection with the killings in the Iraqi town of Haditha.

Wuterich, 31, admitted one count of negligent dereliction of duty but manslaughter charges were dropped as part of a plea deal.

Wuterich, who led an eight-man squad whose other members have all been let off, was sentenced to 90 days of confinement and reduced in rank to private but will serve no jail time under the deal with prosecutors.

Anonymous, in the statement on the puckettfaraj.com website, said it wanted to bring attention to the “brutality of US imperialism.”

“Can you believe this (expletive deleted) had his charges reduced to involuntary manslaughter and got away with only a pay cut?” it said.

“Meanwhile Bradley Manning who was brave enough to risk his life and freedom to expose the truth about government corruption is threatened with life imprisonment,” the group said in a reference to the US soldier accused of leaking classified US documents to WikiLeaks.

Anonymous Hacks Boston Police Department Website Over December Occupy Eviction

Huffington Post
Feb. 3, 2012
By Peter Finocchiaro

Notorious hacker collective Anonymous attacked and defaced the website of the Boston Police Department Friday, apparently in retaliation for a police raid on an Occupy Boston encampment in the city’s Dewey Square on December 10.

For long stretches of the morning, the website, BPDNews.com, has loaded an Anonymous-designed web page called “Anti-Sec,” also the name of the collective’s months-long campaign against a number of governments and corporations.

The page includes a message from the collective, titled, “Anonymous hacks Boston Police website in retaliation for police brutality at OWS,” as well as an embedded version of the KRS-One music video, “Sound of Da Police.”

Tibetan Group Releases Photos of Chinese Crackdown

Feb. 3, 2012
By Kurt Achin

A Tibetan activist group has released photos it says are from the sites of recent protests, showing Chinese riot police beating and dragging bloodied demonstrators. The group says the photos prove China is acting brutally toward unarmed, peaceful demonstrators.

The photographs, released by the group Students for a Free Tibet, show Chinese riot police standing over and dragging protestors, one of them appearing to have blood on his head. The group says the photos were taken in Serta, in China’s Sichuan province.

Dorjee Tseten, the India director of the group, based in the northern Indian city of Dharamsala, says the photos show China has not been telling the truth about the demonstrations in recent weeks.

“The Chinese government says like those protestors were shot on self defense but in the picture we can clearly see the protestors are like unarmed, they are protesting with non-violent protest and then police crackdown the protest very brutally and kill Tibetans,” he said.

Tibetan exile Prime Minister Lobsang Sangay was quoted Thursday as saying he is “very disturbed by the growing number of Chinese military personnel” moving into Tibetan areas with truckloads of paramilitary forces and automatic machine guns.

Anonymous hacks into phone call between FBI and Scotland Yard

Feb. 3, 2012

Hackers from the Anonymous group have hacked into a private conference call between the FBI and Scotland Yard, accessing details of a major international cybercrime investigation, the FBI has confirmed.

The FBI and Scotland Yard confirmed that the security of the call – between the FBI, the Yard, and, it is understood, someone from MI5 – had been breached.

Investigators can be heard discussing their joint inquiry into a cybercrime case which is going through the British courts, and is linked to investigations in New York and Baltimore and in Ireland.

With Tax Break, Corporate Rate Is Lowest in Decades

Wall Street Journal
Feb. 3, 2012

WASHINGTON—U.S. companies are booking higher profits than ever. But the number crunchers in Washington are puzzling over a phenomenon that has just come into view: Corporate tax receipts as a share of profits are at their lowest level in at least 40 years.

Total corporate federal taxes paid fell to 12.1% of profits earned from activities within the U.S. in fiscal 2011, which ended Sept. 30, according to the Congressional Budget Office. That’s the lowest level since at least 1972. And well below the 25.6% companies paid on average from 1987 to 2008.

Anonymous hackers access Greek ministry website

Feb. 3, 2012

ATHENS (Reuters) – Hackers associated with the activist group Anonymous posted a protest against Greece’s EU and IMF-inspired austerity policies on the website of the country’s justice ministry Friday, a ministry spokeswoman said.

The site was taken offline until it was secure, she said.

Hackers involved with the loosely organized group Anonymous have been linked to attacks around the world aimed at punishing governments for policies they dislike or at showing that corporations’ data security efforts are inadequate.

The hackers said they were protesting against the near-bankrupt country’s bailout by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund which has been associated with unpopular austerity policies.

“You have joined the IMF against your people’s acquiescence… democracy was given birth in your country but you have killed it,” said a two-minute video in English which said it was from Anonymous and was posted on the ministry website.

Neo-Nazi member calls hacking ‘an invasion of privacy’

CBC News
Feb. 2, 2012

Some Canadians whose associations with white supremacist and neo-Nazi groups were recently revealed, are defending their involvement with the organizations, while others deny having anything to do with the groups anymore.

CBC News reported Wednesday that the names of 74 Canadians were found in files leaked by computer hackers in Europe who were intent on exposing hate movements. The identities were revealed on a website called nazi-leaks.net, which is now offline.

“It is an invasion of privacy,” said Joel Henry, of Langley, B.C., in a telephone interview with CBC News Thursday.

“I have my beliefs and I still have my beliefs,” said Henry. “It’s just certain members of the group want to go out and beat the s–t out of people and I don’t condone that.”

McLean Welsh, of Nanaimo, B.C., who is attending school in Quebec, sought to distance himself from one of the hacked organizations.

“I could be on the list because I bought a couple T-shirts off that website a couple of years ago,” said Welsh, when reached via Skype. “For instance, the shirt I’m wearing right now.”
Welsh said he has severed his ties with the group.

“I joined the Stormfront once and it just didn’t appeal to me,” said Welsh. “Because as soon as you say you’re proud to be white, you’re automatically associated with a Nazi party.”

ACLU urges Senate to support ban on racial profiling

Raw Story
Feb. 2, 2012
By Eric W. Dolan

The American Civil Liberties Union has called on the U.S. Senate to pass legislation that would prohibit local, state and federal law enforcement agencies from racially profiling suspected criminals.

Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD) introduced the End Racial Profiling Act in 2011, but the bill has not yet been taken up by the Senate Committee on the Judiciary.

“For more than a century black men and women traveling through predominantly white neighborhoods have been questioned for no reason – simply because police officers felt they didn‘t belong there,” the ACLU said in a letter (PDF) sent to senators. “During the past decade, as international terrorism has become a subject of intense concern, those of Arab and South Asian descent have been spied upon, stopped, questioned and subjected to intensified police scrutiny based on racial characteristics rather than any evidence of wrongdoing.”

“Most recently, local police in Alabama have been circulating in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods, telling folks to go inside their homes or possibly face arrest – because the state passed a law requiring police to verify the immigration status of people who they stop or arrest.”

The End Racial Profiling Act would prohibit law enforcement agents from stopping investigating, arresting, or detaining an individual based on his or her race, ethnicity, religion, or national origin.
