Struggling Wikileaks stops publishing classified files

BBC News
Oct. 24, 2011

The whistle-blowing website Wikileaks is suspending its publication of classified files.

Wikileaks said that it would focus instead on raising funds to ensure its future survival.

The announcement came after what the group called a blockade by US-based finance companies.

This followed its disclosure on the internet of hundreds of thousands of secret US government files and diplomatic cables.

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange said that since last December an “arbitrary and unlawful financial blockade” had been imposed by Bank of America, Visa, MasterCard, PayPal and Western Union.

“The attack has destroyed 95% of our revenue,” he said.

The former computer hacker said the organisation had lost “tens of millions of dollars in lost donations at a time of unprecedented operational costs”.

“A handful of US finance companies cannot be allowed to decide how the whole world votes with its pocket,” he added.

Mr Assange said Wikileaks must “aggressively fundraise in order to fight back against this blockade and its proponents”.

He said the group was taking pre-litigation action against the blockade in Iceland, Denmark, the UK, Brussels, the United States and Australia and had lodged an anti-trust complaint at the European Commission.

A Wikileaks spokesman, Kristinn Hrafnsson said its website would reopen for submissions of confidential documents on 28 November.

Mr Assange is in Britain awaiting a decision by the High Court on the appeal against his extradition to Sweden to face sex assault charges.

After the hearing in July, judges did not give a date for their decision on Mr Assange’s bid to overturn a judgment made in February.

Three Faces of Racial Profiling: Profiling Communities is Bad Law Enforcement

ACLU
Oct. 24, 2011

Our new website, Mapping the FBI, exposes the FBI’s nationwide racial and ethnic mapping program. Looking at it, you might be surprised to learn that the FBI is forbidden from racial profiling – former Attorney General John Ashcroft banned it in 2003. However, that ban – the Justice Department’s Guidance Regarding the Use of Race by Federal Law Enforcement Agencies – wasn’t at all effective in stopping racial profiling. In fact, it allowed the FBI’s industrial strength version of racial profiling to start because of its enormous loopholes for national security and border integrity investigations. As you can see with the FBI’s racial and ethnic mapping program, the loopholes swallowed the rule.

Attorney General Michael Mukasey issued updated guidelines changing how FBI agents can investigate in 2008, authorizing the FBI to begin invasive investigations called “Assessments” without any factual basis for suspecting wrongdoing. One type of Assessment is called “Domain Management” which involves collecting and mapping racial and ethnic demographic information and “facilities” and tracking racial and ethnic “behaviors.”

Deeply disturbed that the FBI claimed this authority, the ACLU submitted Freedom of Information Act requests across the country. What we found is astounding.

Like the inappropriate police scrutiny of individuals based on racial or ethnic characteristics rather than evidence of wrongdoing in traditional racial profiling cases, racial mapping leads to the scrutiny of entire communities based on racial or ethnic makeup. Racial mapping is essentially racial profiling on a much larger scale.

For instance, a Detroit FBI memorandum entitled “Detroit Domain Management,” notes there are more than 40 groups designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. State Department, many of which originate in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. It states that:

“… because Michigan has a large Middle-Eastern and Muslim population, it is prime territory for attempted radicalization and recruitment by these terrorist groups,” [the Detroit FBI seeks to open a] “Domain Assessment for the purpose of collecting information and evaluating the threat posed by international terrorist groups conducting recruitment, radicalization, fund-raising, or even violent terrorist acts within the state of Michigan.”

Collecting information about the entire Middle-Eastern and Muslim community in Michigan, and treating them all as suspect, is an unjust and unconstitutional violation of their civil rights and an affront to religious freedom and American values.

If there’s any doubt about the purpose of Domain Management, the FBI intelligence director who started the program once showed a New York Times reporter a map of San Francisco where a “cluster” of Iranian immigrants were found, and said that’s where “an FBI squad was “hunting.”

As we now know from the FBI’s own documents we received through FOIA, the FBI didn’t stop at national security cases. We found it also looked at other crime problems that would not fit within the national security loophole in Justice Department’s racial profiling ban, made rank racial stereotypes regarding the types of people FBI agents felt were involved in that type of crime, and mapped entire communities based on these stereotypes. So a crime threat from the MS-13 gang was used to justify mapping the “Hispanic” communities in New Jersey, Alabama, Georgia and California, even though the FBI knew that MS-13 included non-Hispanics.

Anonymous shuts down hidden child abuse hub

The Register
Oct. 24, 2011
By John Leyden

Members of hacktivist collective Anonymous are claiming credit for shutting down a deep underground child abuse site and outing its membership list.

Account details of 1,589 members of Lolita City were posted as part of Anonymous’ Operation Darknet, a wider effort aimed against abuse of the Tor network by paedophiles. Lolita City, said to be hosted by Freedom Hosting, alone housed more than 100GB of child pornography, according to a statement by Anonymous.

As well as providing anonymisation, the Tor network supports a private “dark” top-level domain, .onion. Sites on the “hidden” domain were only visible to Tor users or through Tor gateways, such as tor2web.org. Although some services, such as anything that uses UDP, are blocked, .onion sites are by no means immune to hacking – as the attack by Anonymous illustrates.

Anonymous members discovered links to child abuse images in a section called Hard Candy on a .onion site called The Hidden Wiki. Anonymous removed the links, which were reposted by a site administrator. After noticing that “95 per cent of the child pornography listed on the Hidden Wiki shared a digital fingerprint with the shared hosting server at Freedom Hosting”, the hacktivists issued a series of ultimatums, which were ignored.

Anonymous then began a series of denial-of-service attacks aimed at Freedom Hosting, and most particularly Lolita City. The user database of the site was extracted using a SQL injection attack, ars technica reports.

The Tor network is widely used by human rights activists and often used as a means to get around government-applied censorship controls, such as the Great Firewall of China. The service is also used to exchange pirated content or by paedophiles.

Tor activist Jacob Applebaum welcomed Anonymous’ action: “Anonymous pwned a bunch of pedos; huzzah,” he said via his ioerror Twitter account.

Tens of thousands in Hungary protest govt policy

Associated Press
Oct. 23, 2011

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — Tens of thousands of protesters have attended a rally expressing their opposition to the policies of Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
Speakers from several civic groups, united by the “I don’t like the regime” motto, condemned a wide range of government measures, from restrictive media polices to changes in the tax system hurting the poor.
Balazs Denes, head of the Hungarian Civil Liberties Union, said the weak opposition parties in parliament, up against Orban’s two-thirds majority, were also responsible for the problems affecting Hungarian democracy.

Police spy tricked lover with activist ‘cover story’

Guardian
Oct. 23, 2011
By and

A former police spymaster who spent years living deep undercover in the protest movement has confessed he tricked an innocent woman into having a long-term relationship with him, as part of an elaborate attempt to lend “credibility” to his alter ego.

Bob Lambert, who adopted a false identity to infiltrate leftwing and animal rights groups, said he had the 18-month relationship with the woman, who was not herself involved in political activism, as part of his cover story.

The Guardian has detailed the cases of seven undercover police officers known to have infiltrated protest movements, mostly in the past decade. Of those, five have had sexual relationships with women who were oblivious to their real identities.

Lambert, who became an academic after a 26-year career in the special branch of the Metropolitan police, made the admission after the Guardian contacted him about their relationship.

In a statement, he offered an “unreserved apology” to the woman, who does not want her identity to be revealed, and said he was also sorry for deceiving “law-abiding members of London Greenpeace,” a peaceful protest group.

His former partner, who recently discovered the long-haired political activist she had the relationship with in the 1980s was actually an undercover police officer, said she felt “violated” by the experience.

“I was cruelly tricked and it has made me very angry,” the woman said. “I am actually quite damaged by the whole thing. I am still not over it.”

Police chiefs have claimed that officers who spy on protesters are not permitted “under any circumstances” to sleep with activists. But police spies are known to have been having relationships with activists as recently as last year, as part of a secret police operation to monitor political activists that has been in place since the late 1960s.

In most cases, the police officers developed long-term relationships and their subsequent disappearance left women feeling traumatised and angry.

CIA Kidnapped, Tortured “the Wrong Guy,” Says Former Agency Operative Glenn Carle

Truthout
Oct. 23, 2011
By Jason Leopold

Rob Richer, the No. 2 ranking official in the CIA’s clandestine service, paid a visit to Glenn Carle‘s office in December 2002 and presented the veteran CIA operative with an urgent proposal.
“I want you to go on a temporary assignment,” Carle recalls Richer telling him. “It’s important for the agency, it’s important for the country and it’s important for you. Will you do it?”
Richer, who resigned from the CIA in 2005 and went to work for the mercenary outfit Blackwater, told Carle that agency operatives had just rendered a “high-value target,” an Afghan in his mid-forties named Haji Pacha Wazir, who was purported to be Osama bin Laden’s personal banker as well as financier for a number of suspected terrorists. Wazir was being held at a CIA black site prison in Morocco, and the agency needed a clandestine officer who spoke French to take over the interrogation of the detainee.
Carle, formerly the deputy national intelligence officer for transitional threats, who had no prior interrogation experience, agreed, and within 72 hours, he boarded a CIA-chartered jet bound for Morocco.

The Interrogator
Carle recounts what unfolded next in his riveting book, “The Interrogator: An Education,” which stands as a damning indictment of the CIA’s torture and rendition program and the Bush administration’s approach to the so-called Global War on Terror.
Carle refers to Wazir in his book as CAPTUS. The CIA, which did not respond to requests for comment for this report, would not allow Carle to print Wazir ‘s name in his book, nor was he permitted to disclose the locations of the two black site prisons where Wazir was imprisoned and tortured.
A report published in Harper’s in July first disclosed that CAPTUS is Wazir and the location of the CIA black site prisons where he was held.
During an on-camera interview with Truthout in Washington, DC, Carle said he originally believed the agency had captured a “significant Al-Qaeda leader” who had been a concern to US intelligence agencies “for a long time.”
